It is important to gain the right amount of weight during your pregnancy. Both too much and too little are associated with long term complications for children and their mothers. The amount of weight you should gain, during pregnancy, is based on your weight prior to becoming pregnant. The body mass index (BMI) measures your body fat based on your height and weight. A normal and healthy weight is a BMI of 18.5-24.9. A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight. Women who have a BMI, before pregnancy, of 30 or higher are considered obese.
Complementary and alternative medicine is popular, but is it safe?
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is made up of treatments and healthcare products that are not generally consider conventional medicine.
The nation Institute of Health (NIH) Categorizes Cam therapies as follow:
Natural products-dietary supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, herbs
Manipulative techniques-including chiropractic alignments, massage
Mind-body techniques-meditation, yoga, tai chi Complete (whole body) systems-traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and homoeopathy.
Why use them?
Many women use CAM treatments when mainstream methods have not relieved their symptoms, or if they presume that a “natural” approach is less dangerous.
Are they safe?
Some of the products and therapies have known benefits and studies but many may be harmful or useless. Some may react with medications that have been prescribed for you.Since these medications are not regulated by the FDA unless there is proven harm there is little control that what is on the label is what is in the bottle. There are some situations where Cam supplements can be unwise. If you are pregnant or may become pregnant herbs and mega-dose vitamins should be avoided. If you are planning surgery some supplements may increase bleeding or interfere with the medications given froanesthesia.
Be sure to check with your health care provider if you have any questions about using Cam. Useful link National center for complementary and alternative medicine
